How I Connect With Influencers Like Demi Lovato And Jake Paul (And How You Can Too)

Whether you’re trying to connect with your favorite thought leader, or the latest YouTuber, the same rules apply: Be Realistic: I see this all the time. I didn’t start out interviewing big influencers right out of the gate. What’s in it for the influencer? If you’re looking to connect with a thought leader, don’t be afraid to reach out to a second or third connection. Get Social Proof: I didn’t get to meet Demi Lovato without proving myself first. I had to interview smaller influencers and work my way up to her. So, when Demi Lovato’s people looked me up, they saw that I belonged at the party. It’s going to take some time to get the social proof, which is why you start small and always get a pic! Ask For Something Specific: Another common mistake I see, is people asking influencers to follow them on social. Hey @lelepons I love you so much, please follow me.” Trust me, they’re never going to follow you so stop asking.

Since January of 2017, I’ve connected with just about every big influencer on the planet: Pharrell Williams, Lele Pons, Demi Lovato, Jake Paul, Amanda Cerny, King Bach, Kate Hudson, etc.

People always ask me, “How do you meet all of these people? I want to work with them too.”

Whether you’re trying to connect with your favorite thought leader, or the latest YouTuber, the same rules apply:

  • Be Realistic: I see this all the time. You’re a regular guy and you want to meet The Rock. Sure, it’d be cool to hang out with him but the chances of that happening are pretty slim. You can’t go right to the top. You need to start small. I didn’t start out interviewing big influencers right out of the gate. I started with smaller, lesser-known ones, and worked my way up.
  • Form A Relationship: Follow them on social. Like and comment on their posts. Watch their YouTube channels. Read their blogs. If you’re trying to connect with a thought leader, they usually include contact information on their website, so shoot them a note. I’ve found that Twitter is the best social media channel to connect with influencers because they respond to comments more there, than all of the other channels combined.
  • Offer Them Something: A common mistake I see is this, “Hey @influencer I’d love to chat, hmu.” They want to meet an influencer, but don’t have anything to…
