The Washington Capitals dictated play from the start in a 5-2 win over the Devils on Saturday at the Capital One Arena. The Devils dropped one point behind the Caps for first place in the Metropolitan Division in the final game of 2017 for both teams. It was their first regulation loss since Dec. 9, when they lost 5-2 to the Rangers. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence set up the Capitals' second goal to double the lead later in the first period. Backstrom then reversed ice again to feed a cutting Djoos on the left side for a goal at 11:09. The Devils got within one on John Moore's sixth goal of the season at 17:35 of the first period. Moore finished a one-timer from the right circle off a cross-ice pass from Travis Zajac. Washington converted on its lone power play of the night when defenseman John Carlson blasted a shot from the right circle over the right shoulder of Devils goalie Cory Schneider at 7:01 of the second period. WASHINGTON — The Devils will enter 2018 in second place.

The Washington Capitals dictated play from the start in a 5-2 win over the Devils on Saturday at the Capital One Arena. The Devils dropped one point behind the Caps for first place in the Metropolitan Division in the final game of 2017 for both teams.

The loss dropped the Devils to 22-10-6. It was their first regulation loss since Dec. 9, when they lost 5-2 to the Rangers.

The Capitals were off on Friday when the Devils lost in overtime to the Buffalo Sabres, and the home team showed its legs early. Tom Wilson blasted a close-range shot under the crossbar from the front of the crease off a feed from Christian Djoos for a 1-0 lead 2:26 into play.

A tic-tac-toe passing sequence set up the Capitals’ second goal to double the lead later in the first period. Alex Ovechkin hit Nicklas Backstrom in the right circle. Backstrom then reversed ice again to feed a cutting Djoos on the left side for a goal at 11:09.
