Google’s business model might depend on advertising, but the company appears to be willing to put a stop to ads that ruin a user’s experience. The Alphabet company is planning to put an ad-blocking feature in its popular Chrome browser, which filters out certain online ads that give users a bad experience when they’re browsing the web, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the company’s plans. It would identify unacceptable ads based on those defined as good or bad by an industry group called the Coalition for Better Ads, which released a series of ad standards last month. The sources added that Google could announce the new feature in the next few weeks, or not move ahead with it at all.
Facebook is making another move to encourage the development of virtual reality. It’s releasing a toolkit that makes it easier to capture and share virtual reality video. Facebook announced the 360 Capture SDK on Wednesday morning at its F8 developers conference. Virtual reality video is often made by capturing each individual frame of an existing video and reformatting it as a new video. Facebook engineers call the new process “cube mapping,” according to The Verge, which is more efficient and leads to better image quality.
